How to Avoid a Plateau

What is a plateau?? Generally, a plateau refers to a halt in progress in one or more of the following areas:

- Motivation

- Training Performance

- Strength

- Weight Loss/Muscle Gain

Plateaus can be super frustrating to deal with while on your fitness journey, but the truth is that they happen to most of us! Heres some tips to help avoid plateaus!

1. Set a Goal!

The first step to avoiding plateau is to set yourself a goal- this gives you a REASON to train/ eat well etc. Setting a goal also makes it a lot easier to plan a roadmap to your success! Your goal should clearly identify what it is that you want to achieve, and it can sometimes be helpful to give yourself a time limit (ideally 3-6 months). doing this will give your training a purpose, and help with your motivation to keep going!

2. Progress Your Training.

The second thing you should be doing to avoid a plateau is to progressively overload your training! What works for you when you first start, MAY NOT work for you in 4 weeks or 4 months time! Our bodies adapt to the stimulus we give them, so we need to change the stimulus over time to keep them progressing! this can be as simple as moving from a machine based exercise to a free weight exercise, or can be related to your training intensity (ie. increasing sets or reps, increasing weight, decreasing rest, changing tempo). 3. Effective Nutrition

To avoid plateauing in your training, weight loss or muscle gain, you need to ensure your nutrition is MATCHED to your training! If you want to lose body fat, you need to be eating accordingly. If you want to build muscle, you need to be eating accordingly. If you want to improve your strength or training performance YOU NEED TO BE EATING ACCORDINGLY!
